On Monday 15th October UMSU conducted a protest aimed at highlighting a broad range topics from top up fees to staff cutbacks.

Alan Gilbert is the President of the University of Manchester and was the focal point of much of the protesters’ frustration. Further background to the protests, from the perspective of the demonstrators, can be found on the website run by UMSU’s Campaigns Officer, Andy Cunningham: UMSU Activist.

Were you at the protest? What did you make of the protesters’ tactics and do you think the protest was a success?

Well done! Students making themselves heard! Fuck Fees!
but hang on, i thought that students didnt care
The so called ‘protestors’ are an embarrassment.
I am sick to the back teeth of a certain clique using the Student Union and the student tag to view their own opinions.
I am not interested in Student Respect or their activities and the Student Union should not be used as a private vehicle for their activities.
As a student in Manchester I want our union to actively help and support our students and our local area. I find it completely hypocritical that we are expected to solve everyone else’s problems when we are not even active in our local community.
Our Union is an embarrassment.
Well mr t if people like you actually participated in Union politics by turning up to the general meetings which are adequately advertised, then there would be a democratic change in policy, in a direction which is less embarrassing. I agree with your assessment, but disagree with your apathy. The collective silence of people like you are ruining the Union by letting these people on the loose! Your the embarrassment!
